Motorola's chief of its mobile division, Sanjay Jha, is working hard to restore that part of the company to profitability. Motorola currently uses 7 different platforms for its various cell phone models, and Jha has stated he will cut that down to three.
In the future, Motorola's business-focused smartphones will continue to use Windows Mobile, while its low-end handsets will use the internally-developed P2K system. The remaining cell phones will apparently use Google's Android operating system. The reduction in supported systems will likely result in thousands of layoffs, expected as early as tomorrow when the company reports its quarterly earnings.
Interestingly, there is no mention of Symbian, despite Motorola being one of the early members of the new Symbian Foundation. [via Wall Street Journal]
